What is the SVEB certificate "Instructor - Implementation of learning events" and what is it needed for?

The certificate is issued by theSwiss Association for Adult Education(SVEB), which is responsible for theTraining of trainers(AdA) and has created a qualification framework for this purpose: the AdA toolkit. TheAdA modular systemhas three levels. The instructor certificate "Conducting learning events" belongs to level 1 and certifies that its holders are able to conduct lessons in groups.

Anyone who works or wants to work in the training and further education of adults needs not only experience and specialist knowledge in the field of training, but also the know-how to impart knowledge. Many schools and associations therefore require this for employment as a course instructor or trainer.SVEB certificate.

There are two instructor certificates:

  • Trainer - Implementation of learning events(the former SVEB 1 certificate course instructor)
  • Instructor - individual support(the former SVEB 1 certificate for practical trainers)

Holders of the SVEB certificate Instructor - Implementation of learning events can:

  • Plan learning events with groups of adults according to predefined concepts
  • Carry out learning events
  • Shape the exchange among the participants
  • review and assess the learning success of the participants
  • give participants feedback on their individual learning process
  • Evaluate learning events
  • reflect on their own attitude and role as trainers in learning events.

The courses leading to the "SVEB Certificate for Trainers - Conducting Learning Events" (formerly: SVEB Course Leader) are aimed at people who

  • want to pass on their specialist knowledge and skills to other adults on a part-time basis and acquire the necessary knowledge and suitable methods for teaching in groups.
  • are active as trainers or course instructors in adult education and wish to have their qualifications certified.

Important qualities for working as a trainer are:

  • Good general education and a high level of expertise in the desired teaching field
  • Enjoy working with adults
  • Good appearance and good communication skills
  • Flexibility for irregular assignments and working hours

  • Admission to the course requires a high level of expertise in your own profession, field of interest or specialist area.

Experience in leading courses is not a prerequisite, but it is very helpful. It is therefore recommended that you conduct your own learning events at the latest parallel to attending the course.

Costs and financing of further training

TheCosts for this trainingThe fees for the SVEB Certificate for Trainers - Conducting Learning Events depend on the training provider and generally range between CHF 3900 and CHF 4700 (including teaching materials).

With some providers, theCosts for issuing the SVEB certificateare not included in the course fee, but will be charged additionally at around CHF 60-150.

NOTEProfessional further training has been subsidized by the federal government since 2018. Anyone who follows this SVEB certificate up to the federal certificate as a "trainer" and passes the professional examination will be reimbursed up to 50% of the costs of the preparatory courses by the federal government upon application.

  • The course ispart-timeand is designed indifferent time modelswith aDurationof mostly 5-12 months (SVEB stipulates a minimum of 4 months and a maximum of 3 years).
  • The course is offered asClassroom teachingand asHybrid lessons(on-site and online combined) are offered. At least 5 days of a course must take place in the form of face-to-face teaching.
  • TheTeaching scopeis around 100 hours of contact time (SVEB requirement: 90 hours) plus around 160 hours of supervised and/or individual self-study time.
  • TheClassroom teachingusually takes place one evening a week and on individual Saturdays or weekends.
  • The average weeklyTime requireddepends on the duration of the course chosen and your personal requirements and learning habits.
  • It is recommended that parallel to attending the courseown learning eventsin order to be able to apply and practice what they have learned.

Can you find the time for lessons and self-study?

Completion and SVEB certificate

The requirements for obtaining the SVEB certificate Instructor - Implementation of learning events are:

  • active participation in the course and present for at least 80% of the attendance time
  • passed proof of competence (detailed description of the planning and implementation of a practical demonstration on a freely chosen topic in the course group, stating the targeted competences, learning objectives, methods, media, materials and time schedule)
  • Learning journal (reflection on the personal learning process) or competence portfolio certified by the lecturer
  • Proof of practical experience of at least 150 hours of learning events spread over at least 2 years, of which at least 100 hours with at least 3 participants.

Those who cannot yet provide evidence of all the practical hours will initially receive a course confirmation and can collect the SVEB certificate within a maximum of five years as soon as the necessary amount of practical experience has been demonstrated.

The SVEB certificate Instructor - Implementation of learning events is valid for an unlimited period. It is the first module (of 5) for the federal certificate as an instructor.
