Retail manager: get started as a manager in the retail trade

Retail managers (formerly known as retail economists) hold management positions in retail stores and large retail businesses. They must have in-depth business management knowledge in logistics, finance, marketing and controlling as well as in personnel and company management.

Retail managers are rarely seen on the "sales front". As managers, they plan the management of the company. The success of company management depends above all on the entrepreneurial thinking of retail economists and the customer-oriented attitude of all employees.

Wer sich zum Detailhandelsökonom oder zur Detailhandelsökonomin (neue Bezeichnung: Detailhandelsmanager / Detailhandelsmanagerin) ausbilden lassen möchte, der kann dies in einem Lehrgang tun, der auf die höhere Fachprüfung vorbereitet. Spätestens bei Antritt zur Prüfung sind folgende Kriterien zu erfüllen:
  • Eidgenössischer Fachausweis im branchenspezifischen Bereich oder Diplom einer höheren Fachprüfung, einer höheren Fachschule oder Fachhochschule
  • Mindestens drei Jahre Berufserfahrung in einer Kader-Position im Detailhandel

oder

  • Eidg. Fähigkeitszeugnis im Detailhandel oder Abschluss Handelsmittelschule, gymnasialen Maturität oder vergleichbarer Abschluss
  • mindestens sechs Jahre Berufserfahrung, davon drei Jahre in einer Kaderposition im Detailhandel

sowie

  • Alle erforderlichen Modulabschlüsse vorweisen kann
Die Abschlussprüfung der Höheren Fachprüfung zum/zur Detailhandelsmanager/in ( vormals Detailhandelsökonom/in) dauert etwa 9 Stunden und ist in vier Bereiche gegliedert. Alle vier Bereiche fliessen zu gleichen Teilen in die Gesamtnote ein, die mindestens 4,0 betragen muss, um als bestanden zu gelten (Notenwerte 6-1). Keine dieser vier Teile darf jedoch unter der Note 3,0 liegen. Geprüft werden:
  • Analyse einer Fallstudie (schriftlich)
  • Präsentation der Analyse sowie Gruppendiskussion (mündlich)
  • Vorgehenskonzept Fallstudie (schriftlich)
  • Präsentation und Prüfungsgespräch mit Critical Incidents (mündlich)

After the retail manager training course, I can attend the following further training courses:

  • With a vocational baccalaureate, a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration at a university of applied sciences (sur dossier)
  • A postgraduate degree at a university of applied sciences (MAS in Marketing and Management of Services or EMBA in Business Administration)

After completing the diploma course in retail management, you can take on the following responsibilities:

  • Responsible for corporate or divisional planning
  • Responsible for achieving the targets set
  • Exercise personnel management in the individual branches
  • Ensuring compliance with budgets
  • Building a long-term successful position in the market

After training as a retail manager, you will usually perform the following tasks:

  • operate larger branches or several branches
  • Create company and business plans
  • monitor, analyze and optimize measures implemented in various areas (marketing, product range design, purchasing, logistics, personnel management)
  • Inform higher authorities about the success of the implemented measures
  • decide on the distribution of the budget
  • negotiate with suppliers and other business partners

Die Ausbildung zum Detailhandelsmanager / zur Detailhandelsmanagerin dauert 14 Monate (berufsbegleitend). Die Kosten belaufen sich auf ca. CHF 15'000. Die Kosten für die Vorbereitungskurse variieren je nach Anbieter. Es empfiehlt sich daher, direkt mit der Schule deiner Wahl Kontakt aufzunehmen.
