Insurance Agent—Is That Your Career Goal?

Insurance agents advise clients on selecting appropriate insurance and retirement planning solutions. They analyze risks, explain insurance products, and support their clients throughout the entire term of the contract.

Typical activities are

  • Consulting Services for Individual and Business Clients
  • Analysis of Insurance Needs
  • Brokerage of Insurance Products
  • Preparing Quotes
  • Management of Existing Insurance Policies
  • Assistance with Insurance Claims
  • Building long-term customer relationships

This position requires in-depth specialized knowledge. This knowledge is acquired, among other things, in theContinuing Education for Certified Insurance Brokerstaught. There, participants gain knowledge about insurance products, legal principles, and professional consulting and sales techniques.

Training or continuing education, further training to become an insurance agent or insurance broker enables you to offer insurance policies to individuals or businesses and, ideally, to finalize those policies. This role requires a high level of technical knowledge and interpersonal skills. On the one hand, insurance brokers must be able to clearly explain existing risks to their clients and highlight the benefits, opportunities, and protections offered by the policies. On the other hand, qualities such as assertiveness and strong communication skills are required to perform this work confidently and convince clients of the merits of a wide variety of policies. Therefore, individuals who wish to pursue training as an insurance agent must be skilled speakers, enjoy interacting with others, and possess a healthy level of self-confidence.

During an apprenticeship as an insurance agent, you’ll receive training in subjects such as law, the insurance industry, and customer service. This will give you a solid foundation of specialized knowledge in the insurance industry that you can always draw on in your day-to-day work. Are you interested in an apprenticeship as an insurance agent? The program lasts about 20 days of in-person instruction, though this can vary significantly depending on the school where you complete your training. Of course, this also includes self-study and both an oral and a written final exam.

Questions and answers

The course to become an insurance agent lasts around 20 days, or slightly less at some schools, and often takes place one day a week and on Saturdays. However, the course dates can vary considerably from provider to provider, so it is necessary for you to contact the individual training providers directly to find out the current course dates. This can also be done easily and without obligation using our contact form, which you will find below each school profile.

It is perfectly possible to attend the VBV insurance broker course even without professional experience as an insurance broker or in another area of the insurance industry. However, you should bear in mind that in this case you will have to plan additional time for self-study in order to meet the requirements of the examinations. It is best to speak to a person responsible at the schools about your concerns before you register. You can reach the right contact person directly via our contact form or, in the case of some education providers, you can also ask a question directly.

Persons with at least two years of professional experience as an insurance agent / insurance broker can take part in a shortened training course for the VBV certificate after passing an admission test. With one year of professional experience, this condition is not fulfilled, so you must choose the classic course variant, in which you gain basic knowledge of the insurance industry and insurance brokerage.

Passing the final examination to become an insurance agent can earn you the "Insurance Broker VBV" certificate, which is issued and recognized by the Vocational Training Association of the Insurance Industry. This certificate is also recognized by FINMA, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, and is permitted for registration as an insurance intermediary. This registration is required if you wish to work as an independent insurance intermediary. FVPS Swiss Financial Planners Association and SFPO Swiss Financial Planners Organization members also benefit from eight continuing education points for each day of attendance.
