How does exam anxiety therapy work?
Exam anxiety therapy / exam anxiety coaching is characterized above all by its accompanying, advisory and supportive qualities. Those affected receive help along the way. However, exam anxiety therapy does not follow a one-size-fits-all approach, but is adapted to the physical and mental state of each individual and situation. The approaches of the respective treatment options, such as yoga, autogenic training, meditation, hypnosis or psychotherapy, are also very different.
As a rule, the following procedure is usual for exam anxiety therapy, for example with a psychologist:
- First, the symptoms and complaints are described by the affected person and diagnosed by a qualified specialist
- The appropriate treatment method is then determined and discussed with the person affected. The method of cognitive behavioral therapy has proven effective for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Here, the affected person presents themselves to the anxiety-related situations and stimuli. The aim is to recognize irrational cognition and strengthen self-confidence.
- In therapy, the person affected deals with the origin and cause of their anxiety, among other things. This can already contribute to relief if it becomes clear, for example, that the anxiety was caused by a stressful experience or that there is no actual (physical) danger behind the symptoms of anxiety.
- In addition, factors that are responsible for maintaining the anxiety are localized. If you are aware of these, you can counter them attentively, which can also be relieving.
- With a lot of practice, time and positive experiences, self-confidence can be strengthened and a comfortable way of dealing with fear can be developed.
