Difference between virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR)
What is the difference between virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR)?
Virtual reality and augmented reality are often mentioned together - even in numerous training courses. But why? What is the difference between the two technologies and what do they have in common?
The main differences are relatively simple:
- Augmented reality is a virtual supplement to "real" reality
- Virtual reality fades out reality and users are completely immersed in the virtual world.
A simple example:
The filters of well-known social media photo apps, for example, make use of augmented reality technology, as the real face can still be seen, but with bunny ears or other hair, a hat or make-up, for example.
In the gaming world of virtual reality technology, everything fades out: You see the world exclusively through VR goggles and sometimes even have joysticks in your hands. If you then look at your own hands through the goggles, they are only displayed virtually. So reality is completely blocked out.
