What does oenology mean?
The term oenology is derived from the Greek "oinos", which translates as "wine". It therefore refers to the study of wine. Nowadays, oenology covers both viticulture and cellar technology.
For a long time, the profession of oenologist was only practiced by men, but it is now also practiced by women. The tasks of an oenologist are diverse and encompass all aspects of wine production from a technological, economic, ecological, social and cultural perspective. As winegrowing specialists, they are not only responsible for viticulture and the use of machinery, staff and equipment, but also for pressing and storage as well as quality assessment by means of laboratory tests. Subsequently, they also take on market management tasks, such as the optimal marketing of the wine. Their daily work also includes keeping up to date with the latest scientific research and applying the latest findings in practice.
A degree in oenology is usually completed with a UAS diploma in viticulture and oenology.
Oenologists work, for example, in laboratories for wine analysis, in research, as consultants, in wineries, in industry or in trade, as well as in the role of a teacher.
