If you want to plan a language study trip to Spain, Mallorca is probably not the first destination that springs to mind. Some people believe that Mallorca stands exclusively for Ballermann, cheap tourism and partying. Far from it, say the experts - because the island has much more to offer. Anyone who has ever traveled to the island in the Mediterranean knows about the beautiful secluded beach bays, the breathtaking nature and the romantic villages. Mallorca is a truly beautiful place for a language study trip.

Which language school in Mallorca is right for you?

With its 3,640 square kilometers, Mallorca is not a very large island, but the language schools are spread over the entire area in various cities and towns. Most Spanish schools are located in Las Palmas, the capital of Mallorca.

Each school offers individual courses and has its own strengths. To find the right language school in Mallorca, you should first think about a few points. Based on the following criteria, you are sure to find the right language course that meets your wishes and expectations.

Look for a Spanish school that offers courses at your learning level. Otherwise, being underchallenged or overchallenged can greatly hinder your progress in learning Spanish. Why don't you make aSpanish placement testso you can already find out the right course level. Some language schools also offer a placement test on site. If you would like to prepare for a language diploma such as the Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE), you can find various diploma courses in Mallorca. In most cases, these diploma preparation courses are limited to a few intensive weeks. Other conventional language courses can be booked for any number of weeks. If you want to improve your Spanish for work, some language schools in Mallorca also offer industry-specific language courses.

When registering for a Spanish course in Mallorca, you need to specify how many hours per week you would like to be taught. In most cases, you can choose between half-day and full-day courses. Some language schools offer optional additional lessons, such as private lessons after school or even leisure courses with dancing or other activities. Most language schools also offer the option of booking private lessons only, optionally at the language teacher's home.

Another criterion that influences the choice of school is the location of the school. If you are only planning a language study trip to Mallorca for a few weeks, you should choose a central location, as you certainly don't just want to think about school during a language study trip, but also have fun and enjoy your free time. If you attend a central language school, you can easily enrich your study days with sightseeing, going out and shopping. If you are planning a longer language study trip in Mallorca, you may prefer a language school a little outside the city center or in a small village. This also has its charms and advantages. In a quiet and less touristy environment, you'll make contact with the locals more quickly and they'll soon get to know you and have a chat when they meet you. In less central locations and in smaller towns, the cost of living is also significantly lower. Most Spanish schools in Mallorca are located right by the sea, others are around 20 kilometers from the coast in Inca or Llucmajor. The largest number of language schools on the coast can be found in Las Palmas, the capital of the island, but Spanish courses are also offered in the small village of Calvia, which is not far from the capital. If you want to avoid touristy places and prefer rural and smaller towns, you should definitely enquire about language courses in the small and picturesque coastal towns of Cala Rajada and Porto Cristo.

When looking at offers from language schools in Mallorca, be sure to pay attention to the following points:

  • Timetables (number of lessons and duration of individual lessons)
  • Mix of nationalities
  • Qualifications and experience of teachers
  • Additional offers (supplementary language courses and lessons)

Where to live in Mallorca?

The language schools in Mallorca often offer to arrange accommodation or its organization is included in the language travel provider's package. If this is not the case or if the language school or language travel provider asks you to make special requests, the following points should be taken into account.

One of the best and often unique opportunities during a language study trip is to stay with a local host family. The family connection enables rapid progress in language acquisition, as people often like to talk about everyday things when living together. In a family environment, it is easier to practise and use your new Spanish skills straight away. Living and spending time together gives language students unique access to the Spanish language and culture. A stay with a host family makes the language stay an unforgettable and impressive experience. The hosts are also happy to give their visitors insider tips on all aspects of their stay. Single, double or multi-bed rooms can be booked with host families, where no meals, breakfast only, half board or full board can be included on request.

Accommodation in a student hall of residence or in a shared flat is also an option during the language study trip. If you opt for this living situation, you may miss out on the valuable access to a local family, but you may make exciting contacts with students and other people from all over the world. In these facilities and shared flats, the bathrooms are usually shared. If retreat and privacy mean a lot to you, there are numerous vacation apartments and apartments available for rent in Mallorca and especially in Las Palmas due to the high level of tourism - depending on the season, however, rental prices are relatively high.

Location also plays a decisive role in choosing the right place to live. In particular, the respective transport connections to the language school and, if necessary, to the city center should be taken into account. Of course, residential addresses from which the language school can be reached on foot are ideal. Especially if you are only planning a short stay, it is better to pay a little more rent and not waste time or money on commuting. If you decide to stay with a host family, you will not be informed of the home address in advance, but will only find out when you arrive in Mallorca. However, the language schools always promise a maximum travel time between school and accommodation, which - depending on the language course provider - is usually between 20 and 45 minutes.

Talk to the language travel provider or the school about your wishes and ideas regarding accommodation in Mallorca, so you are sure to find the right solution.

Where to party in Mallorca?

It goes without saying that partying during a language study trip to Mallorca is a must. The party stronghold attracts around 10 million tourists every year and is one of the most popular destinations, especially among young people.

The most famous party mile on Mallorca is the Ballermann on Palya de Palma in El Arenal. The district, also known as S'Arenal or Arenal, is located on the southern coast at the eastern tip of the famous Playa de Palma beach and east of the capital Palma. The largest European beer garden is also located in this district. The Megapark opens the Ballermann season every year in April and presents several live acts every day, including well-known pop singers. The party in this club - as in the rest of the Arenal - is mostly held outdoors and directly on the beach promenade. If you are in the Arenal, you are sure to visit Schinkenstrasse. Bars and clubs are lined up here, attracting guests with happy hours. Schinkenstrasse is also home to the Bierkönig, one of the most popular discos for Malle fans.

In this guide, however, we don't want to focus exclusively on this side of Mallorca, but also show what else Mallorca has to offer discerning and stylish travelers. The smaller towns, fishing villages and harbor towns in particular offer numerous romantic and picturesque places to go out. The La Lonja district in Palma, with its winding romantic alleyways and numerous restaurants serving local culinary specialties, cafés and tapas bars with stylish live music, is a popular nightlife district, far away from the Ballermann. The Santa Catalina district is also a popular destination for night owls looking for a stylish night out.

The route network is well developed and buses run to all the main towns and villages. The most important public transport hub and starting point is Placa d'Espanya (also known as Estación Intermodal) in Palma. Bus fares are paid directly to the driver when boarding the bus, so if possible you should already have the necessary change.

If you are traveling within Palma by city bus, you will pay around 1.40 francs per journey. To check all bus connections within Palma at any time, it is worth using the MobiPalma app, which shows suitable connections from your current location. What you can afford in Mallorca

The cost of living in Mallorca varies greatly depending on where you live, your lifestyle and the surrounding area. The more touristy the area, the more expensive the costs for accommodation, food and activities. If you want to live where the high society lives, you may spend more than in Switzerland. The cost of living is significantly lower in rural and less developed areas. It is therefore well worth doing your research before deciding where to live during your language study trip in Mallorca.

The prices in restaurants and in gastronomy in general are quite high in Mallorca - compared to the Spanish mainland. So if you cook for yourself and eat out very little, you can save a lot. Apartments in Mallorca also cost almost twice as much as rents in southern Spanish coastal areas. A small two-room apartment in Mallorca hardly costs less than 600 francs a month.

This means that a language study trip to Mallorca is more suitable for people who have an appropriate budget. The language school and host family model is also recommended here. The costs for 20 weekly Spanish lessons and accommodation with a host family with half board amount to around 500 francs per week, which is around 20% more than on the mainland.
