Personnel assistant training: experiences and tips from course instructor Ralf Kofler - it is important to obtain the HRSE certificate from the sponsoring association, as this is the only way to be admitted to the federal specialist certificate

Who are you and what is your professional background to date?

My name is Ralf Kofler. I have been working in HR for over thirty years in both the operational and consulting sectors. I have also been involved as a lecturer, course director, board member and member of the Executive Board for the same length of time. As a result, I know the education landscape very well and am very familiar with the connections between the tertiary levels, bridging courses and higher vocational education and training. As a lecturer, I am passionate about sharing my knowledge with people interested in education and also with other lecturers. I am a lecturer and responsible for HR courses at Art of Formation - Weiterbildung WBA. I am therefore also responsible for the HR Assistant training course.

Who is the target group for the HR Assistant course?

The target group for the HR assistant or HR assistant course are career changers who would like to switch to HR from another profession and people who are already working in HR administration. In the case of professionals, it can be a question of professional development or of obtaining a certificate confirming the knowledge acquired in practice. This is also the first stage in obtaining a specialist certificate in HR.

What are the admission criteria for the HR assistant training program?

Two years of general professional experience are required at the time of the certificate examination in order to complete the HR assistant or HR assistant training and graduate with an HRSE certificate. This applies if you have an EFZ or a Matura. Without these qualifications, 4 years of general professional experience are required.

What is the content of this further training course in personnel administration?

The learning content of the HR assistant training course is as follows:

  • Fundamentals of Human Resource Management
  • Personnel administration
  • Payroll administration
  • Fundamentals of labor law
  • Additional topics such as authorization to sign, commercial register, personnel training, internal communication, self-management
  • Targeted preparation for the certificate examination

The knowledge acquired in the further training course for HR assistants will enable you to perform a qualified function in HR administration.

How long does the training take and how much does it cost?

The HR assistant or HR assistant training course lasts around six months. The WBA training program offers a Saturday (full-day) and weekly (two evenings) version. The training costs just under CHF 3,000, plus examination fees and the cost of teaching materials.

What are the career development opportunities?

The HR Assistant qualification with a certificate from the sponsoring association is the basis for the professional examination for HR specialists with a federal certificate. In my opinion, the value on the job market is very high. When qualified positions in the field of HR assistant or HR administrator are advertised today, this qualification is usually mentioned as a requirement in the job profile.

What distinguishes WBA as an innovative training partner in the HR sector?

WBA is a school that functions independently of location. Nevertheless, there are various locations where you can compensate for what might be lost with digital teaching. This creates an optimal mix through hybrid learning (online teaching mixed with face-to-face teaching), which we implement in practice - also for the HR assistant training. The digital learning platform, which is used consistently, is certainly also a major advantage. With the fixed costs we can save on expensive training locations, as we are rented at our locations as required, our students receive interesting prices for their training and further education. This means that the HR Assistant course can also be attended at a reasonable price.

How do you like the organization of the WBA from the perspective of a lecturer and subject specialist?

It is particularly important to me that what the students are taught is correct and of good quality. They should be enthusiastic and engaged. To impart knowledge in a concentrated way. We succeed in doing this in the HR assistant training program thanks to the motivated and uncomplicated school management, which for me is embodied by Rolf Schmalz at the WBA. Decisions are made quickly and for the benefit of the students. I now also have the opportunity to set up two new digital courses. I am happy to take on this challenge.

What motivated you to work as a lecturer for so many years?

When I started in HR around 35 years ago, there were no further training courses such as HR assistant. Except for a self-study course. Most ambitious colleagues have completed this course. Since then, I have witnessed all the stages in the development of today's HR specialist certificate course. I was able to support various reforms as a member of the specialist board and as an expert. It was always important to me to have professionals in the HR field who are well versed in this area. Making my contribution to this is one of my passions - also in the area of HR assistant training.

What advantages do you see in online teaching compared to face-to-face teaching?

The most important advantage for students is certainly the independence of location. In the evening after work, students can study wherever they feel comfortable - at home or in the office. This means you can train to become a HR assistant without having to travel or find a parking space. In addition to geographical independence, it is important to build up digital skills through digital training and learning how to use digital platforms professionally. This ideally complements the professional and personal skills from the HR assistant course. As a lecturer, I also have the same advantages and always have the concentrated knowledge available digitally. By having direct access to information and documents during lessons, I can offer students even more as a lecturer.
