My name is Michael Ackermann and I am responsible for the financial expert training course at the KV Basel business school. I am a qualified auditor and business economist FH. I have been responsible as a CFO (Head of Finance) for many years and have gained corresponding professional experience. I have been working in financial management consulting since 2019. I have been a part-time lecturer since 2016.
I took over responsibility for the NDS HF Financial Management and Accounting course around a year ago and have been teaching the subject of company valuation since then. As a financial expert course leader, it is very important to me that I have a good exchange with the students. This is even easier if I teach one of the subjects in the financial expert course myself. As I also teach the subject of company valuation in another continuing education course (with the accounting and controlling expert), this fits in very well.
A meaningful company valuation requires good knowledge not only of "company valuation", but also of other disciplines, such as knowledge of accounting, corporate finance, taxes, etc.. Business valuation is therefore a subject that integrates a lot of knowledge that we all cover in the postgraduate course in finance. I find that extremely exciting.
In my professional career to date, I have had the opportunity to carry out and support many company valuations myself as a financial expert. I find it very exciting to be able to calculate the value of a company myself. In addition, it is always very surprising how different the results of a company valuation can be. So it is certainly not an exact science, but at the same time it is very important to understand which factors have a particular influence on the value of a company. This is what we cover, among other things, in the subject of company valuation in the Financial Expert course.
I try to get into practical tasks very quickly. A little theory, then get straight into examples and group work in which the students have to value companies themselves. This is because company valuation is a subject that requires a lot of practice in financial education. Methodologically, it is therefore a combination of theory and lots of exercises, which we then discuss with each other to consolidate the theory. As a financial expert, I always include practical examples when a company valuation is discussed in the financial media.
Based on my experience as a financial expert, I can give students a lot of practical relevance in this subject. What's more, I still find the subject extremely exciting even after more than 20 years of practical application. I am very pleased when I can motivate students for the subject and impart the relevant knowledge to them.
The NDS HF Financial Management and Accounting (financial expert incl. digitalization module) is a broad course with 400 lessons spread over three semesters. It focuses on the core areas for which a CFO (Chief Financial Officer - Head of Finance and Accounting) is generally responsible in a small to medium-sized company. This means that in addition to specific financial topics, areas such as occupational pensions, risk management, leadership and others are also covered. The relevant topics relating to the digitalization of the finance function are now also covered with around 50 lessons. The Finance Expert course is therefore broadly based and participants receive further training in a concentrated form over three semesters, which is aimed in particular at medium-sized companies. All lecturers are long-standing experts in their fields, which is why what they learn is very practice-oriented.
