How do I become an EFZ retail specialist?

The EFZ in retail is one of the apprenticeship qualifications that can be obtained not only through a vocational apprenticeship, but also through school.

For young people

Young people can do an apprenticeship or attend a private retail school. The EFZ retail trade specialist apprenticeship at a private retail trade school lasts three years and consists of three parts:

  • 3 semesters of school, 2 internship days per week in the second and third semester
  • This is followed by 1 year of work experience in the retail trade.
  • This is followed by another semester of school, which is primarily used to prepare for the final apprenticeship examination (QV).

At the end, the apprentices take the federal final apprenticeship examination (QV) and, if they pass, receive the federal certificate of proficiency as an EFZ retail specialist.

For adults

Adults have two options for obtaining the EFZ:

1. catch-up training for adults in accordance with Art. 32 BBV

Adults can take part in the regular federal final apprenticeship examination (QV) and, if they pass, receive the federal certificate of competence as an EFZ retail specialist.

The requirements for admission to the EFZ retail specialist examination are

  • Practical work experienceAdults who have been employed for at least 5 years, including at least 3 years in the retail trade of the desired sector, can use this time as practical professional experience for the acquisition of the EFZ.
  • The theoretical knowledge of the vocational schoolThey can catch up in special preparatory courses for adults or acquire them through self-study.

2. validation of educational achievements

Adults who have the required professional experience also have the option of proving through a validation procedure that they have all the skills that are tested in the final apprenticeship examination (QV) for retail specialist EFZ / Detailhandelsfachfrau EFZ. If the validation is approved, they will receive the EFZ without the final apprenticeship examination (QV).
