Who can do a 10th school year? Will I even be admitted?

The admission conditions and requirements of the public and private offers are very different.

In the cantonally organized courses, your grades are irrelevant for admission to the general 10th school year. What does matter, however, is your previous behavior at school. If you have completed the compulsory nine years of school but have been absent a lot or have often been late, you may not be admitted. Nevertheless, you can submit your application dossier. Your case will then be reviewed. When applying, in many places you will also have to prove that you have applied for apprenticeships but have not been offered any.

The admission requirements for the non-public offers are less strict. You can obtain specific information on this from the providers themselves.

  • Additional conditions apply to some offers for the 10th school year:
  • For certain professions, you need a minimum grade in certain subjects. For example, a secondary school leaving certificate with an average grade of 5 is sometimes required for the 10th school year with a commercial focus.
  • You need a good average grade to be admitted to a secondary school.
  • For some professions, you have to take an entrance exam at the training center. This tests whether you are suitable for this sector. This is the case, for example, with the preliminary design course. This is a special form of the 10th school year and is necessary for anyone who wants to become a media designer, goldsmith or another creative profession.
  • Sometimes you will also be asked to submit Multicheck or Basic Check results. These are standardized tests from independent providers throughout Switzerland that prove that you are suitable for a specific professional field.
