Questions and answers

Training costs of between CHF 2,400 and CHF 6,400 are incurred for the tax clerk course. Additional costs may also be incurred for external examinations.

The tax clerk course generally covers the following topics (the names may vary from provider to provider):

  • Financial accounting (e.g. basics of double-entry bookkeeping, accounts receivable, accounts payable, annual financial statements, accruals and deferrals, provisions, depreciation and amortization, correct booking of value added tax (VAT))
  • Cost accounting & controlling (e.g. introduction to cost type, cost center and cost unit accounting, budgeting and key figure analysis)
  • Swiss tax system (e.g. income and wealth tax on natural persons, withholding tax, withholding tax)
  • Financial software & practical applications (e.g. introduction to common accounting software (e.g. Abacus))
  • Legal foundations & social insurance (e.g. commercial law foundations in the financial sector, overview of the most important social insurances (AHV, IV, ALV, BVG))

Depending on the training provider, continuing education, further training to become a tax assistant or tax clerk takes between one and two semesters. Prospective tax clerks attend between 98 and 300 lessons. Further information can be obtained directly from the schools.

The qualifications awarded for continuing education, further training as a tax clerk can vary depending on the provider. For example, the KBZ Kaufmännische Bildungszentrum Zug awards the qualification "Tax Specialist, edupool.ch", the KV Basel business school the title "Junior Tax Officer" and the KV Zurich Business School the certificate "Tax Specialist".

Participants in continuing education, further training as a tax clerk are expected to have completed basic commercial training or basic tax knowledge, as well as accounting knowledge at the same level. Depending on the school, professional experience or other criteria may also be required of course participants, but please contact the respective school directly using the contact form.
