What is the difference between CAS, DAS and CHE?

The difference between CAS, DAS and CHE lies in their level or their classification in the Swiss education system:

  1. CAS: A CAS (Certificate of Advanced Studies) is a short continuing education course at a Universities. It usually lasts one semester and is completed on a part-time basis. CASs do not have a federally protected title and can only be compared internationally on the basis of the credit points earned (usually 10-15 ECTS).
  2. DAS: A DAS (Diploma of Advanced Studies) is a short continuing education course at a Universities, which is usually completed with a diploma thesis. It usually lasts two to three semesters and is completed on a part-time basis. DAS is not a federally protected title and can only be compared internationally on the basis of the ECTS credits earned (usually 30 ECTS).
  3. CHE: Colleges of Higher Education (CHE) are part of higher vocational education and training. They tend to have a generalist focus (e.g. business economist CHE or technician CHE), but more and more subject- and industry-specific courses are also being offered (e.g. marketing manager CHE, banking economist CHE). The practical relevance is high and the focus is on problems from everyday working life. Courses at colleges of Higher Education generally last three years and lead to a federal diploma. This is more prestigious than the federal certificate. The final examination is based on a permanent transfer of practical experience by means of assignments (practical, semester or diploma thesis), but may also include a traditional examination, depending on the school.
