Wie lange dauert eine Ausbildung zum Automatiker / zur Automatikerin?

How long does it take to train as an automation technician?

There are various options for training or further training to become an automation technician. On the one hand, there is basic training to become either an automation technician with a Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (VET Diploma) or an automation fitter (VET Diploma). These basic training courses last 4 years and 3 years respectively. This can be followed by continuing education, further training in the form of a Federal Professional Examination, for example to become an automation specialist. This continuing education, further training takes 2 years and is completed while working.

At a College of Higher Education, for example, you can train to become a systems engineering technician CHE, specializing in automation (now: systems technician CHE), which usually takes place over a period of three years while working. The certificate course in building automation is much shorter, taking just one year. For an MAS, a Master of Advanced Studies, you have to reckon with two years of study plus a Master's thesis.

Note: From fall 2022, the CHE technician courses (formerly "CHE technician specialization") will have their own framework curriculum and a new title for each specialization. For example, the course "Techniker CHE Systemtechnik" will now be called "Systemtechniker CHE". The specializations have also been abolished.
