Wie kann ich Schulleiter werden? Ist auch eine Schulleiter Ausbildung Quereinsteiger möglich?

How can I become a head teacher? Is it possible to train as a school principal for career changers?

The admission requirements for training and continuing education, further training to become a school principal are listed by the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education (EDK) in the document "Profile for additional school leadership training" dated October 29, 2009 under Article 4.

The following prerequisites are generally required:

  • Teaching diploma for kindergarten, elementary school, lower-secondary level or upper-secondary level
  • At least five years of teaching experience and
  • School management activity during the additional training. Persons without a management function are also admitted, provided they have a corresponding practical field during the training. This could be, for example, a deputy head teacher, head of a steering group, head of a level or project manager. It is of central importance here that the respective persons can demonstrate competencies in operational management as well as personnel management.

However, it is also possible to become a head teacher without a teaching diploma. In these justified exceptional cases, the following criteria must be met:

  • University degree or equivalent recognized qualification
  • Several years of professional experience related to the Swiss education system, as well as management experience and
  • Employment or designation as head teacher in a public or private educational institution

It is advisable to contact the respective educational institution in advance, as they may have additional individual requirements.
