When studying to become an interpreter at a Universities, you have the opportunity to choose between different language combinations in addition to your basic language, which in German-speaking Switzerland is German, French or Italian. For example, you can choose English, Italian, Spanish or French as your first or second foreign language. If you choose French or Italian as your basic language, you will take German as your first foreign language and English as your second. Other languages are also available as a third foreign language, which can be taken as a compulsory elective after the second semester. English is compulsory as a first or second language for all basic languages.
