To date, there are three federally recognized training and further education courses for hairdressers.

These include vocational education and training (apprenticeship) with a Federal VET Diploma (VET), the Federal Professional Examination with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education and the Advanced Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (AFPE) to become a hairdresser or hairdresser.

All of these courses teach different content, depending on the knowledge and skills of the respective target group.

Here is a brief overview of the course content:

• Specialist skills: Hair cutting, styling and care, hair and scalp care, coloring, bleaching, tinting, styling and hairstyle design
• Communication and advice: recognizing and analyzing customer needs, type advice (face shape, style, hair structure), advice on products, care and styling, complaint management and conflict resolution
• Sales (business administration) and marketing: presentation of products and services, cash register management and simple accounting tasks, stock management and ordering
• Knowledge of the profession/industry: history and development of the hairdressing profession, job description and professional ethics, ecology and sustainability in the salon
• Occupational health and safety: Occupational health and safety
