What is supplier management?

Supplier management generally refers to the active organization, control and development of supplier relationships, i.e. the cooperation with suppliers. A distinction is made between operational and strategic supplier management. In the operational area, the aim is to purchase goods at the lowest possible price, while in the strategic area it is more about building medium and long-term relationships with suppliers. This medium and long-term approach gave rise to Total Supply Management (TSM), which is regarded as a holistic approach and modern management method. TSM combines a central organizational unit, supplier evaluation, external supplier development, internal process optimization as well as reporting and risk management in order to achieve and implement a holistic view of supplier relationships.
