It is not difficult for detectives to become self-employed, but the workload rarely allows them to do this as their main occupation. By law, however, working as a private detective requires a permit or license in some cantons, namely Aargau, both Basel, Geneva and Neuchâtel, Lucerne, Jura, Nidwalden, Solothurn, St. Gallen, Thurgau and Ticino. The police departments will inform you about the cantonal licensing requirements.
