It is possible to become self-employed as a midwife directly after completing your studies at a University of Applied Sciences, but this is not really recommended. A large part of the course is theoretical, and only after three years do you complete a 10-month internship before writing your Bachelor's thesis and, if you pass, receiving your degree. These 10 months are usually not enough to be prepared for every possible situation that may arise during pregnancy or childbirth, as there is simply a lack of routine. It is therefore highly advisable, for the benefit of all concerned, to work in a permanent position for a few years before taking the step towards becoming a freelance midwife.
