An interior designer can carry out many activities, all of which deal with the design of spaces. These can be enclosed spaces, such as homes, offices or stores, as well as open spaces, such as an entire city (including spatial development or spatial planning). A furnishing consultant with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education, on the other hand, works in furniture departments, furniture stores, interior decoration companies or antique shops, where they advise customers on all aspects of furnishing, design, decoration and equipment. This includes the right furniture and home textiles as well as a suitable room layout, the right proportions, lighting, colors and shapes, materials and composition. A furnishing consultant (FPE) can therefore also be described as an interior designer, but with a federal qualification and extensive knowledge of interior design.
