Entwerfen Bauingenieure ausschliesslich Häuser?

Do civil engineers only design houses?

No, not even close. The field of activity of civil engineers is extremely diverse and ranges from residential and office buildings, shopping centers and hospitals, administrative buildings and theaters to road construction, traffic planning and railroad systems with freight handling facilities, track construction and much more. Bridge construction, industrial buildings and the construction of supporting structures for production plants and machinery are also part of the tasks of civil engineering, as are the construction of towers, masts, chimneys, hydraulic engineering, hydroelectric power plants, riverbank construction, river engineering and port construction. Civil engineers are also responsible for water supply, water disposal, provision and treatment of drinking water, sewerage and wastewater technology, as well as foundation engineering and soil mechanics, which includes, for example, tunnel construction, foundation systems, excavations, geological assessments, terrain stabilization and much more. Civil engineering is therefore involved in the complete design of our living spaces and bears great responsibility even beyond its own generation.
