Englischlernen: Wie ermittele ich mein Sprachniveau respektive Sprachlevel?
Learning English: How do I determine my language level?
If you want to take a language course to learn English, you should know what you can already do and what you want to achieve - in other words, you should know your language level. Only in this way will you be able to choose exactly the right course from the wealth of English courses on offer that will perfectly support you in your language training and neither under- nor overtax you.
In Switzerland, most language school courses for learning English are divided according to language level. These range from A1 to C2. This classification is a division of ability defined by the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages" in order to make foreign language skills comparable. Anyone who has attended a language course at level B2 and passes it with an exam therefore has roughly the same knowledge as anyone else who has studied at this level, regardless of the school, city or even country. A B2 course in Basel is therefore relatively identical in terms of content to a B2 course in London.
If you take an English language test, you will be able to assess your own foreign language skills - your language level - with confidence, provided of course that you do not use any aids or ask for help. This is certainly possible with online language tests, but will not help you to make a realistic assessment of your skills. Because only when you know what you can actually do can you take the next step and choose a suitable English course that will develop your skills and give you the knowledge you need to reach the next level. So always be honest with yourself, because only then can you really benefit from learning English.
