Do I need a degree to work in marriage counseling?
Working in marriage counseling or couples counseling requires a great deal of empathy, psychological and therapeutic skills as well as social skills, which usually require a sound basic education as well as continuing education, further training. Most marriage counsellors are therefore qualified psychologists, social pedagogues, medical doctors or social work professionals who specialize in their future work in counselling spouses and partners by completing a postgraduate course or other therapeutic or systemic counselling continuing education, further training. However, you can also become active in marriage counseling in other ways, for example by completing a diploma course with a subsequent Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE) to become a counselor in the psychosocial field.
