What is part of the curriculum at grammar schools? Can I specialize?

Broad general education

The Gymnasium provides a broad general education in languages and mathematics as well as in the natural sciences and humanities. The general education is taught in ten basic subjects. In German-speaking Switzerland, these are

  • German or Romansh
  • French
  • Italian or English or Latin or Greek
  • Mathematics
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • History
  • Geography
  • Visual arts and/or music

Specialization

In addition to the basic subjects, there areCore and supplementary subjects. All students at a Gymnasium must choose one major subject and one supplementary subject, thus creating their own individual Matura profile.

The grammar school with a focus on "Business and Law" supplements the basic subjects with thecombined major subject "Business and Law"and thus optimally prepares students for later fields of study such as business administration or law.

Supplementary subjects are, for example, physics, philosophy, computer science or sport. Some grammar schools with a focus on "Economics and Law" specify the supplementary subject (e.g. geography), while others offer a free choice within the scope of their curriculum.

You can find an overview of all specializations and supplementary subjects in ourMaturity self-test for adults.
