Admission to thepublicLong-term or short-term grammar school isregulated cantonally. In some cantons there are entrance examinations. Elsewhere, a recommendation from the class teacher is sufficient.
PrivateGrammar schools have different admission requirements. They often require an aptitude assessment - in the form of tests or interviews. Some schools admit all interested students, regularly review their progress and chances of success during the course of their schooling and make recommendations for continuing their education on this basis.
Adults who wish to obtain the Matura by the second educational pathway must have completed compulsory schooling or have the relevant knowledge (including French and English).
The Matura degree requires two successful achievements: the Matura thesis and the Matura examinations.
TheMatura thesisis an individual assignment in the final year before the examinations. In consultation with a teacher, the Matura students work on a self-defined question or topic and document this in a written paper. This is an excellent opportunity to highlight and demonstrate their own interests and abilities.
At the end of the training, theMaturity examinationstaken. The examinations are written (in all subjects) and some are also oral (details can be found in ourMaturity self-test for adults).
Many schools and grammar schools are authorized by the Swiss. Maturity Commission,House auditsto take the examinations. They are allowed to conduct the Matura examinations themselves, i.e. on their own premises and with their own teachers. In addition to the familiar setting, in-house examinations also have the advantage that experience grades from the school years are taken into account in the Matura grade and a final examination only has to be taken in 6 out of 12 subjects.
Schools that are not allowed to offer the Hausmatura prepare students for theExternal federal baccalaureate examinationbefore. This can be taken as a complete examination or in two partial examinations.
