What do I learn in the preparatory courses for the professional examination? What can I do as an insurance specialist (BP)?

In the preparatory courses for the professional examination to become an insurance specialist, you will be taught the basics of the insurance industry, marketing and law as well as personal management. You also have the opportunity to specialize and acquire in-depth knowledge in an elective area. In the preparatory courses, you will also be specifically prepared for the written and oral parts of the examination.

The learning content of the preparatory courses is based on the specifications of the sponsor of the professional examination, the Vocational Training Association of the Swiss Insurance Industry (VBV). The VBV distinguishes between so-called "compulsory modules", "elective modules" and "process modules".

The four compulsory modules form the basis of the course:

  • Personal management
  • Insurance industry
  • Insurance law
  • Insurance marketing

The eleven elective modules offer the opportunity to acquire specific specialist knowledge in three different sectors. There is a choice:

  • AHV/IV and other social insurances
  • Banking & Finance
  • Property insurance
  • Asset insurance
  • Individual life insurance
  • Technical insurance
  • Transport insurance
  • Group life insurance
  • Health insurance
  • Accident insurance
  • Insurance medicine.

Finally, you can specialize in one of the four available process modules:

  • Broking
  • Underwriting incl. product management
  • Claims and benefits processing/service management
  • Sales and support

The chosen specialization is tested at the professional examination.

Due to their high level of expertise, insurance specialists with a federal certificate are able to take on demanding specialist and advisory tasks as well as management tasks.

Their activities differ depending on the chosen specialization:

  • You design, develop and implement insurance products (underwriting and product management)
  • You check and process claims (claims and benefits processing)
  • They broker insurance contracts to customers (broking) or
  • They acquire and advise new customers by putting together suitable insurance concepts (sales and support).
