Pedicurists carefully examine the feet and recognize when a customer needs medical foot care and must be referred to a podiatrist or doctor.

The term pedicure (also: pédicure and pedicure) is synonymous with "cosmetic foot care" and "cosmetic pedicurist", i.e. the term stands for the treatment AND the person.
There are two types of foot care: cosmetic foot care, also known as pedicure, and medical foot care, also known as podiatry. Cosmetic pedicure only treats healthy feet. Sick feet (e.g. with diabetes or ingrown nails) belong in the hands of podiatrists.
