Different routes to the baccalaureate

The baccalaureate is usually obtained in adolescence via a long or short-term baccalaureate at upper secondary level. But it's not too late after that: adults can still obtain the baccalaureate via the second educational pathway.

 

Matura for adults

Adults can take the baccalaureate after the end of compulsory schooling. There are two ways to do this:

  • You attend a private or public baccalaureate school
  • They prepare individually for the Matura examination and register independently for the federal Matura examination.

ThePrerequisites and admission requirementsdepend on the respective Matura schools. In principle, the following applies:

  • Completed 18th year of age
  • Completed compulsory schooling or equivalent knowledge including French and English
  • Good knowledge of German
  • Interest in a broad general education
  • partly: Entrance examination
