Marketing Bachelor: Study marketing - from the ground up

Although marketing plays a very important role throughout the economy and practically every company employs internal or external marketing specialists, for many years there was no undergraduate course in marketing. In most cases, marketing experts completed higher vocational training courses, such as marketing specialists with a federal certificate or marketing managers with a federal diploma, or training and further education courses at higher technical colleges, postgraduate courses at universities of applied sciences or the schools' own certificate courses without a recognized qualification. This makes the Bachelor of Marketing as a basic course of study at university of applied sciences level a novelty in Switzerland compared to the degrees in marketing that have existed for many years.

So if you want to study marketing and don't want to miss out on a university degree, you no longer need to take a detour via a foundation course, e.g. in business administration, but can complete a Bachelor's degree in marketing directly. The marketing degree provides a sound and comprehensive grounding in marketing and business administration, with a strong emphasis on the digitalized environment of marketing. While the first part of the marketing degree program is general, students choose one of the following specializations in the second part:

  • Sales
  • Business Development
  • Business Communication
  • Business Psychology
  • General Management
  • Entrepreneurship & Start Ups
  • Digital Supply Chain Management.

The Marketing Bachelor's degree is usually completed in a modular and part-time format. It creates a perfect basis for a successful career in marketing and provides access to numerous Master's courses and continuing education courses for in-depth specialization in a desired sub-area of marketing.

Creative people who like to put themselves in the shoes of different customer needs, who do not shy away from new technological challenges and who are also interested in conceptual, organizational and analytical tasks have probably made a good choice with the Marketing Bachelor's degree.

In order to study for a Bachelor's degree in Marketing at a university of applied sciences, it is usually a prerequisite that you have completed either the vocational baccalaureate (BMS) or the baccalaureate from a grammar school and have at least one year of professional experience in the commercial sector. Persons with a different, equivalent educational background can apply for admission to the marketing degree program on the basis of a Sur-Dossier. This means that individual clarification with the relevant university of applied sciences is necessary. Exceptional admissions are also approved for marketing studies.

How much a marketing manager earns after successfully completing a bachelor's degree in marketing depends on numerous factors. As a rule, you can expect a gross starting salary of around 75,000 - 78,000 francs per year as a junior marketing manager after completing a marketing degree. Over the years, the gross annual salary can increase to around CHF 155,000 - however, this also depends heavily on any further training, specializations and the degree of management and project responsibility.

A Bachelor's degree in Marketing opens the door to a national or international career in marketing in small, medium-sized and large companies. It is also possible to work in advertising and media agencies. Classic tasks are:

  • Conceptual and strategic tasks
  • Market and customer analyses
  • Creative activities
  • Controlling

The Bachelor's degree in Marketing opens up the following professional fields, among others:

  • Marketing Management
  • Digital/Online Marketing Management
  • Product management
  • Brand Management
  • Digital Analysis
  • Social Media & Community Management
  • Customer Service Management

For many years, there were only marketing courses in the area of further vocational training (e.g. as a marketing specialist with a federal certificate or as a marketing manager with a federal diploma) or at the higher technical college level or further education courses at university of applied sciences level.

In March 2022, the "Marketing Bachelor" was launched as the first degree course at university of applied sciences level. This is the first time in Switzerland that it has been possible to study for a Bachelor's degree at a university of applied sciences with a focus on marketing.

After the Bachelor of Science FH in Marketing, you can add a Master's degree in Business Administration at a university of applied sciences (e.g. major in marketing, online business or international management). Postgraduate degree programs or postgraduate courses at universities of applied sciences would also be a useful addition to the BSC Bachelor in Marketing. These include, for example, MAS in Communication Management, Digital Marketing or Strategy and Marketing Management or EMBA with a specialization in strategic marketing or international management.

The FH degree course in Marketing lasts 8 semesters and starts 6 times a year. This can be completed in different time variants and teaching variants: Saturday variant, two-evening variant or interactive teaching. As the Bachelor's degree in Marketing is part-time, you can continue to work (almost) full-time during your studies. The Bachelor's degree in Marketing has a modular structure and the examination dates are sensibly distributed over the two years of basic studies and two years of advanced studies. There are seven specializations to choose from and digital content and channels are generally the focus of the Marketing degree course. The Bachelor's degree in Marketing is internationally recognized through the federal accreditation of the University of Applied Sciences.
