KV reform 2023: What will change in commercial apprenticeships?

KV apprenticeship 2023 adapted to the digitalized world of work

Many routines that were once performed in administration are now carried out by machines. The ability to write down a text in shorthand with a sharp pencil and fast fingers and then type it out is no longer needed. Even transcribing from dictaphone tapes is largely a thing of the past - computers do it much faster with voice-to-text apps. Computers can also calculate faster, draw up balance sheets faster, translate faster and, thanks to artificial intelligence, write texts faster than we can.

The skills that an EFZ commercial clerk must have today are changing, as are the tools and technologies they work with. The commercial apprenticeship has therefore been updated (commercial apprenticeship reform 2023). From August 2023, prospective commercial clerks will be trained to carry out their tasks with the help of digital technologies in a practical, independent and reflective manner, to act competently within the company and with outsiders and to work in various forms of work and organization. In addition to specialist knowledge and ICT skills, social, methodological and personal skills will also be taught and promoted in commercial apprenticeships under the new commercial apprenticeship reform 2023.

KV reform 2023: Subjects and profiles to be dropped

Areas of competence instead of subjects

The learning objectives of the KV apprenticeship are now no longer defined by subjects, but by competencies in five areas of activity, namely:

  • Acting in agile forms of work and organization
  • Interacting in a networked working environment
  • Coordinating business work processes
  • Shaping customer and supplier relationships
  • Use of technologies from the digital world of work

The learning content of the previous subjects German, foreign languages, IKA (information, communication, administration), business and society as well as general education will continue to be taught - insofar as they are relevant to professional practice - but no longer in separate subjects, but embedded in learning units of the five areas of competence, for example French in customer contact or commercial law when drawing up customs export documents.

Compulsory electives and specializations (options) instead of profiles

In the 2023 commercial apprenticeship, the previous two variants of basic training - the basic profile (B profile) and the more demanding advanced profile (E profile) - will no longer exist. This distinction has not proven itself in the working world: The two profiles have differed, among other things, in the number of foreign languages to be learned (B profile: 1, E profile: 2). But commercial skills and performance are not exclusively expressed in the mastery of foreign languages. Some people are strong communicators, but only in their mother tongue, others are technologically fit or good at math, but break out in a sweat just hearing "Comment allez-vous?" - both groups were forced to learn in the B profile under the old model without making full use of their resources.

As a result of the CT reform, apprentices can now tailor their apprenticeship to their strengths and interests by choosing elective subjects and specialization options. Foreign languages are a compulsory elective subject: All apprentices now acquire knowledge of two foreign languages (other national languages or English). The first foreign language must be learned orally and in writing, the second either orally and in writing or only orally, based on situations and topics that are actually expected in the profession.

In the third year of their commercial apprenticeship, apprentices choose one of four specialization options:

  • Finances
  • Communication with stakeholders in the local language
  • Communication with stakeholders in the foreign language
  • Technology

Students document their chosen electives and specializations as well as all other achievements (language certificates, competition prizes, project work, etc.) in an electronic portfolio, which they can later use to distinguish themselves on the job market.

KV apprenticeship 2023: What remains the same?

As before, the new commercial apprenticeship takes place at three learning locations: in the company, at the vocational college and in industry-specific inter-company courses* (üK).

The apprenticeship can still be completed both in-company ("dual apprenticeship" or "company-organized basic training", BOG) and at school ("school-organized basic training", SOG).

The previous M profile, i.e. the option to graduate with a vocational baccalaureate (BM1), still exists (but is no longer called a "profile"); the connection to the vocational baccalaureate after the apprenticeship (BM2) is also guaranteed. For the vocational baccalaureate, two foreign languages must be chosen orally and in writing in the compulsory elective area.

The duration is still:

  • Company apprenticeship: 3 years
  • Company apprenticeship with vocational baccalaureate (BM1): 4 years
  • SOG: 3-4 years

How the KV reform 2023 will affect theCatch-up training for adultsis still largely unclear. Read moreherewhat we have been able to find out so far (April 2023).
