How long do the preparatory courses to become a timber construction foreman with a federal certificate (BP) last and how much do they cost?

Duration and procedure

  • The majority of preparation courses are designed to be part-time. In some cases, full-time courses or combinations of first full-time and then part-time courses are also offered.
  • The part-time courses last 2 semesters, comprise around 550-650 lessons and usually start in August or September.
  • The in-service training courses take place one and a half days a week or two days every two weeks; depending on the school, there are also individual block courses lasting several days (e.g. introductory course, themed course on staircase construction).
  • The federal examination to become a timber construction foreman takes place once a year (if enough suitable candidates register, otherwise every two years). It can be taken in German, French or Italian.

Costs

  • The course costs for preparing for the professional examination to become a timber construction foreman with a federal certificate range from around CHF 6,000 to CHF 14,000. Some providers include additional services (e.g. meals and accommodation, CAD introductory courses).
  • In some cases, separate costs are incurred for materials, teaching aids, internal examinations, etc.
  • The fee for the federal examination is CHF 950 plus CHF 50 for the federal certificate (as of 2021; these fees are not included in the course costs).
  • The federal government provides financial support for higher vocational education and training. Anyone who has passed the professional examination will receive up to half of the further training costs back from the federal government on application (regardless of the result).
