Registration for the Engineering MSE program and aptitude test

Not all universities of applied sciences offer all 14 profiles of the Engineering MSE degree program. TheRegistrationor the application for admission to the course is submitted to one of the UASs offering the desired profile. After registration, this UAS carries out aSuitability assessmentand, if necessary, requests a supplementary admission interview.

After admission, all Engineering MSE students receive a personalizedAdvisor.They work out their study plan with him or her and present it to theIndividual study agreement(ISV). The ISV also includes the basic training objectives, the profile, the planned modules, supplementary events and suitable theory modules.

Procedure and engineering MSE study locations

The Engineering Master's degree program has a modular structure. It consists of aBasic trainingin theory and supplementary subjects and thetechnical deepening. The Engineering MSE program comprises a total of 90 ECTS credits, 1/3 of which are allocated to basic training and 2/3 to specialization.

Basic training (30 ECTS credits)

Basic training is offered at central locations in Lausanne, Lugano or Zurich and occasionally at other locations. There are over 135 modules to choose from in three module groups.

The module groups Engineering MSE:

  • Technical-scientific modules (TSM). TSM modules teach profile-specific specialist skills and supplement the decentralized specialization modules.
  • Advanced theoretical foundations (FTP). FTP modules cover theoretical foundations such as higher mathematics, physics, information theory, chemistry, etc.
  • Context modules (CM). CM modules teach additional skills in areas such as technology management, business administration, communication, project management, patent law, contract law, etc.

The module group abbreviations TSM (technical scientific modules), FTP (fundamental theoretical principles) and CM (context modules) are used throughout Switzerland.

Each module comprises 3 ECTS points. At least 10 modules must be completed for the basic training, including 4 TSM, 3 FTP, 2 CM and 1 module of your choice (TSM, FTP or CM).

Specialist specialization (60 ECTS credits)

Half of the specialization of the Engineering MSE course consists of the specialization in the profile, the other half consists of a Master's thesis. This takes place at the university of applied sciences at which the students are enrolled.

  • Profile specialization(30 ECTS credits): MSE students deepen their specialist knowledge in seminars, special modules and by working on current research projects, where they also gain valuable experience. These projects are practice-oriented and are often commissioned by industry or the public sector.
  • Master thesis(30 ECTS credits): MSE students develop an independent project for their degree and present it in their Master's thesis in a comprehensible, methodologically, conceptually and scientifically convincing manner. In doing so, they demonstrate that they are able to contribute independently to solving a current problem in their profile area.


Title

Students who successfully complete the Master's degree program in Engineering UAS are awarded a title along the lines of "Master of Science [name of UAS] in Engineering with specialization in [name of profile]", for example:

  • Master of Science OST in Engineering with specialization in Medical Engineering
  • Master of Science ZHAW in Engineering with specialization in Data Science
  • Master of Science FHNW in Engineering with specialization in Building Technologies

The title "Master of Science in Engineering (MSc)" is protected, federally recognized and internationally valid.
