Proven practical tips for your video marketing

You have probably already asked yourself what it takes to produce a good video for your educational institute. The experienced video team at Ausbildung-Weiterbildung.ch will show you which tips you can use to create a video easily and safely.

You should definitely follow these 5 tips

Tip no. 1: Determine what goal you want to achieve with the video

What do you want to achieve with your new video? Who do you want to reach? Should your educational institute be at the center of the video or is the focus on an individual course or a specific person? What core message do you want to convey to your target group? Should the school be presented or should the focus be on learning content, training methods, lecturers or career opportunities? Where should your video be used? Are you primarily planning a promotional video for Google & YouTube or would you like to present attractive content on your own website in the video?

You should definitely ask yourself these and other questions when you start your video project. Once you know what goal you want to achieve with the video, you can decide which video types are the most suitable for you: Image video, training video, testimonial video, advertising video/promotional video or even an explanatory video.

By the way: In the next video post, we will show you the various video categories with a number of practical examples from the education sector.

Tip no. 2: Video equipment: expensive is not necessarily better

First things first: even if you take your video production into your own hands, you don't have to invest thousands of francs in new equipment to make a good video. Seek advice from experts and pay attention to the following:

  • CameraThe most important criteria for deciding on a particular model are: Image format, data stream (bit rate), storage medium, size & weight, connections, microphone, aperture and shutter speed, autofocus, battery. We recommend that you seek advice from a specialist dealer as soon as you know exactly what you want to produce with the camera.
  • SoundExperts agree that audio quality is a decisive factor for a good video, usually more important than the picture. In other words: "The sound makes the music". Clip-on microphones are particularly popular and, when used correctly, are better than the built-in camera microphones.
  • TripodA tripod ensures a stable image and also enables a "one-man show", which means you don't necessarily need an additional person to hold the camera.
  • LightEnsure that there is sufficient lighting. Several light sources, with different light intensity and positioned in the right place, give the video a natural sense of space. Avoid backlighting.

Even if it is currently "in" to film with a smartphone, this has nothing to do with high-quality video production, although the quality here is also getting better and better and is definitely a good alternative for a "social media film", for example.

Tip no. 3: Stay authentic in front of the camera too

Your own employees (school management, lecturers, participants) in the video appear authentic and increase the quality of the video. However, the unfamiliar situation in front of the camera leads to discomfort and uncertainty for many people. As a result of this uncertainty, the video does not come across as desired. An important tip for a good video: Don't try to pretend or push yourself in a direction that you don't like and doesn't suit you. Stay true to yourself - stay authentic.

Good preparation for the video shoot pays off. Make sure that the actors/actresses receive the questions and texts in good time so that they can internalize them in their own words. This increases their self-confidence and makes it easier to stand in front of the camera.

The use of memorized texts is not recommended, as this quickly comes across as monotonous, artificial and impersonal. It is best if the actors/actresses appear spontaneous and relaxed despite their preparation.

Tip no. 4: The first few seconds of the video are the most important

Attention is a scarce commodity. To ensure that the target group watches your video for as long as possible, the introduction is extremely important. Studies show that viewers decide in the first 8 seconds whether to continue watching a video or abandon it. That's why you should pay particular attention to the introduction when creating your video. The following tips will help you to reduce the drop-out rate:

  • Avoid long and boring intros and get to the point quickly.
  • Focus on the promise that motivated people interested in education to click on the video.
  • Arouse further interest, start with a "wow effect" (sound, image, emotions, etc.).
  • Be creative. Use your imagination and create a video with that special something.

Tip no. 5: Looking into the camera

Videos look most natural when the camera and the person or object being filmed are at eye level. The viewer looks directly into the camera. This eye contact creates a connection with the viewers and conveys the feeling that the person is speaking directly to them. If there are several interviewees in the video (interview, testimonial statement, conversation), a distinction should be made as to whether the person is looking into the camera in a moderated manner or whether they are answering a question and looking at the interviewee.

  • If you want the background to be blurred or sharp, you can work with different lenses.
  • The following applies to the face: look friendly. Pull the corners of your mouth up slightly and open your lips slightly.
