What is the structure of the Cambridge Advanced Certificate (CAE) exam?

The Cambridge Advanced Certificate (CAE) exam, for example, is the English test that is recognized for admission to universities in the UK. The English certificate certifies knowledge according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) at the level of independent language use. If you pass the handwritten or computer-based test, you will receive a Cambridge Certificate that is valid for an unlimited period of time. The Cambridge Advanced Certificate tests the four skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking. The CAE exam is structured as follows:

  • Reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary (90 minutes) - 56 questions (multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank and matching incl. reading 3,500 words from authentic written publications)
  • Written expression (90 minutes) - write two texts of 250 words each (essay and article, letter or meeting/review etc.)
  • Listening comprehension (40 minutes) - listen to radio, TV or other types of oral speech by native English speakers (2 playbacks) and answer 30 questions about them
  • Language skills (15 minutes) - completed in two groups, two parts speaking alone with the examiner and two parts talking together
