Wie kann ich als Lehrer/in Sport an Schulen unterrichten?
How can I teach sport in schools as a teacher?
The training and function of a PE teacher in schools varies depending on the school level:
- Teacher at primary school level
teaches all subjects from 1st to 6th grade, sports can be one of them. - Teacher at lower-secondary level
Teaches 7th to 9th grade in two to four subjects. Sport can be one of these subjects. - Teacher at upper-secondary level
Taught at baccalaureate schools, vocational secondary schools and vocational colleges. Studying a second (school) subject is not compulsory, but is highly recommended for success on the job market.
Depending on the school level at which teaching is to take place, the courses of study and the routes to the teaching diploma are structured differently:
- Teacher for the primary school level:
Bachelor's degree from a University of Teacher Education (UTE) - Teacher for the lower-secondary level:
As a rule, a Bachelor's degree at a UTE or university, followed by a Master's degree at a UTE. With a BSc in Sport from the Swiss Federal Institute of Sport in Magglingen (SFISM), a Master's degree can be completed at a UTE via a kind of passerell program. - Teacher for the upper-secondary level:
Bachelor's and Master's degree in exercise and sports science at a university or in health sciences and technology, BSc at an FIT. This is followed by around one year of training at a UTE, university or FIT for the teaching diploma for secondary schools. There is also the option of a BSC in Sports at the Swiss Federal Institute of Sport in Magglingen, SFISM, followed by an MSc in Sports Science at the University of Fribourg, which is offered in cooperation with the SFISM, as well as one year of didactic training to qualify as a teacher.
The Swiss Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (VET) offers a 300-hour course in physical education and training.
Admitted are qualified sports teachers from compulsory schools with experience in teaching sports in vocational education and training (VET). Please clarify the exact admission requirements with the individual schools. The course is bilingual (D/F) and is completed with a federal certificate (10 ECTS).
