What is tested in the Cambridge First Certificate (FCE) exam?
The Cambridge First Certificate (FCE) exam is the world's most popular English test and certifies knowledge at an intermediate to advanced level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). If you pass the handwritten or computer-based exam, you receive a Cambridge Certificate that is valid indefinitely. The Cambridge First Certificate tests the four skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking. The FCE exam is structured as follows:
- Reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary (75 minutes) - 52 questions (multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank and matching incl. reading 2,200 words)
- Written expression (80 minutes) - write two texts of 140 to 190 words each (essay and article, letter or meeting/review etc.)
- Listening comprehension (40 minutes) - listen to speeches, conversations or other oral text forms (2 playbacks) and answer 30 questions about them
- Language skills (14 minutes) - completed in two groups, two parts speaking alone and two parts talking together
