Was bedeuten die Sprachniveaubezeichnungen genau?

What exactly do the language level designations mean?

In Switzerland and other European countries, each language course is marked with a suffix indicating the language level you will have reached on completion of the course. This classification is identical throughout Europe and has been developed by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). For you, this means that if you attend a language course at an English school at level B1 in Zurich, for example, you will have roughly the same level of knowledge as someone attending an English course at level B1 in Lisbon. The following subdivisions are made and you can do this after completing a language course at the respective language level:
  • A1: You understand simple questions and can answer them
  • A2: You can communicate in short sentences in familiar situations
  • B1: You can find your way around in almost all everyday situations
  • B2: You can express your opinion spontaneously and clearly on a wide range of topics
  • C1: Fluent and error-free communication is easy for you
  • C2: You now speak this former foreign language almost as well as your own mother tongue
