German language school: What types of German language courses are available at different language levels?
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) divides all important European language tests - including German language courses - into six levels of difficulty: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. This is why a German language school also divides its courses into these language levels. The meaning of the language difficulty levels is as follows:
- A - Elementary use of language
- A1 - can understand and use familiar, everyday expressions and very simple sentences
- A2 - can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance
- B - Independent use of language
- B1 - can understand the main points when clear standard language is used and when dealing with familiar matters from work, school, leisure, etc.
- B2 - can understand the main ideas of complex texts on concrete and abstract topics; also understands technical discussions in their own specialist field
- C - Competent use of language
- C1: advanced level of competence - can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and also grasp implicit meanings
- C2: almost native-speaker command of the language - can understand practically everything he/she reads or hears with ease
