Secondary school 1 and 2: Difference between secondary level 1 & secondary level 2
Secondary school 1 and 2: What is the difference between secondary school 1 and secondary school 2?
The difference between secondary level 1 and secondary level 2 are two educational levels of the Swiss Education System that build on each other:
- At lower-secondary level (so-called district, secondary, intermediate, upper secondary school, etc.), pupils are taught in performance groups in all subjects or in some of the subjects.
- The upper-secondary level follows on from compulsory schooling, which usually lasts nine years. After compulsory schooling, around two thirds of young people move on to vocational education and training (VET), i.e. an apprenticeship that combines school and practical experience in the form of a dual vocational apprenticeship. An apprenticeship leads to a Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training and can also be completed with a Federal Vocational Baccalaureate. Around a third of young people complete a school-based education such as a Specialized School or a Gymnasium, which prepares them to study at a university.
