Kann ich auch als Erwachsener eine Lehre machen?
Can I also do an apprenticeship as an adult?
There are various ways for people who have not completed any vocational training after compulsory schooling to obtain a vocational qualification. One is a regular apprenticeship with an apprenticeship contract, which is also common for young people and lasts between 2 and 4 years, depending on the profession. Shortened basic training is also possible, but this is not offered for every profession and lasts 1 to 2 years. Here too, an apprenticeship contract must be in place and the final apprenticeship examination must be passed as normal. Both options are full-time and are therefore not suitable for people who still have to work. Even without an apprenticeship contract, you can obtain an apprenticeship in a profession that ends with a Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training or a Federal Certificate of Vocational Education and Training. However, you will need at least 5 years of professional experience in your chosen field. With catch-up training, you can attend a special course or study independently for the qualification procedure, the final apprenticeship examination, while working and then take part in it. The fourth option is the validation procedure, in which you provide evidence of your educational achievements in a validation dossier and work on educational gaps required for the profession in courses and seminars at specialized vocational schools. This also takes place on a part-time basis and requires at least five years of professional experience.
