WebRTC: Web real-time communication for initiating audio and video communication relationships

WebRTC is an open standard that enables real-time communication via computer-to-computer connections through a defined collection of communication protocols and programming interfaces (API). This allows web browsers to retrieve real-time information from other users' browsers. This is the prerequisite for video conferencing, file transfer, data transfer, chat or desktop sharing. WebRTC technology is required to initiate audio and video communication relationships via IP-based architectures (e.g. browsers). The negotiation of connection parameters is controlled via a web server. While the NAT problem is solved via STUN, TURN and ICE and the user data is transported via SRTP.

WebRTC web-based communication is supported by the browsers Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Safari and Opera. This applies to both desktop operating systems and Android. Browsers with WebRTC run via the Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS) method.

There is no WebRTC server, but rather a signal or media server for real-time communication. The WebRTC web standard is available in all common browsers as regular JavaScript APIs and a library with the same functionality is available for native clients such as Android and iOS applications. WebRTC stands for Real Time Communication via the web. This enables live chat, video conferencing or internet telephony in the browser. With the help of the Wildix Collaboration App, WebRTC can be used on cell phones or VoIP-based landline phones.

WebRTC is based on the browser-based programming languages in HTML and JavaScript and enables real-time communication. This enables communication between several computers on the network. Users are authorized to use and provide services such as data transfer (video, microphone, photos, documents) via the browser. This allows a WebRTC video conference to be held, for example.

If you do not use a VPN, some private information will be passed on to third parties; measures can be taken to hide the IP address. If you use a VPN and a leak tool (DNS leak test, IP check) indicates a leak, you can carry out the following test procedure:

  • Disconnect VPN and open page in new tab or window
  • Publicly note down IP addresses that you can see
  • Close page
  • Connect with VPN and reopen page
  • There is a data protection leak if you still see one of the public IP addresses.

Even if communication with WebRTC takes place directly from person to person (without an intermediary such as Skype), there are unfortunately security leaks. These put users' data and personal information at risk, especially for people who use VPN extensions. All it usually takes is to allow certain websites to access the microphone or webcam. For this reason, it may be an option for some to deactivate WebRTC in the browser in order to avoid security risks.
