SIP course: Basic technology for VoIP and IP telephony

Companies switching to VoIP should consider the SIP standard as it makes them vendor-independent. No All-IP strategy today can do without this protocol, as it does so much more than just signaling voice. With Session Initiation Protocol telephones, collaboration with other applications and systems is possible. It is also possible to connect directly to a Session Initiation Protocol provider via a cable line, which then ensures maintenance, availability and support. This is a particular advantage for smaller companies. If they have written off their telephony infrastructure (IDSN solution), they should consider SIP as the VoIP standard when making a new purchase. SIP telephones are compatible with many systems or solutions. This is important if the communication solution is to work with or be integrated into other systems. It is important to check the functions against your own requirements in advance.

A SIP course provides knowledge about the introduction, motivation, philosophy, basics and operating rules of the SIP protocol. It explains how to implement telecommunication services with a focus on IP telephony and VoIP. A training course may cover the following topics:

  • Introduction of telephony via IP networks
  • The SIP Proxy, Location Server and User Agent components
  • Functionalities
  • Back-to-Back User Agent (B2BUA) and Session Border Controller (SBC)
  • The protocol, its message types and their structure
  • Scalability and redundancy options
  • Typical processes in the course of establishing a connection and during a call
  • URIs and Tel-URIs: Address formats, identities and their use
  • SDP: Structure, possibilities and profiles
  • Data streams for VoIP and video over IP (RTP and signaling)
  • Features - Instant messaging - Presence
  • Value-added services in the SIP environment: unified communications, conference applications
  • in interaction with NAT and firewalls
  • Fax with T.38 and the connection with Session Initiation Protocol
  • as a protocol in the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)
  • Use of Session Initiation Protocol in provider networks
  • SIP trunking - replacement of the exchange line header

The SIP courses are aimed at employees who are involved with this standard at a planning, conceptual or protocol level. In most cases, a sound knowledge of VoIP is required to take part in the course. Graduates know the advantages, special features and possible applications of the SIP architecture in general and trunking in particular.

Questions and answers

SIP is the abbreviation for Session Initiation Protocol - a network protocol for establishing, controlling and terminating communication between two or more subscribers. The SIP protocol is specified in RFC 3261 and is frequently used in IP telephony. A Swiss SIP telephone connection forms the interface between the public telephone network and a VoIP telephone or such a telephone system. This means that calls can be made over the Internet using a conventional Swiss telephone number.

SIP telephony involves third-generation telephone connections - namely VoIP connections. These telephones are no longer connected to a 2-wire line, but establish a connection via a broadband Internet connection (copper wire cable, fiber optic cable or radio waves). SIP has established itself as the standard protocol for making calls with a VoIP telephone or VoIP connection.

A SIP trunk is a type of telephone connection based on a data line. The SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) network protocol is used to establish and terminate communication sessions. Trunking is the bundling of data on one device or at one point, which is usually used by business customers. With SIP trunking, several phone numbers are operated with a single user name and password. Private customers tend to have SIP line connections, where they receive a user name and password from the VoIP provider.

SIP providers play a central role in VoIP telephony, as they act as a kind of central interface. They provide the service so that calls can be made over the Internet. SIP providers include sipcall, phonestar, sipstar, VoIP-One, Peoplefone, voip.free, netvoip etc.

SIP uses a technology for telephony in order to be able to use data transmission via the Internet. To be able to use a SIP phone, you need a connection to a VoIP provider. Unlike other IP telephones, they use the open Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and are therefore compatible with most IP telephone systems.

With SIP, you no longer need a conventional telephone connection, but can simply connect via the existing Internet infrastructure. The connection to the network is established via Ethernet or WLAN (wireless). Most IP telephones use SIP as the network protocol to establish the VOP connection.

There are three different types of telephone connections that can be used for Internet telephony with the SIP protocol:

  • Analog
  • ISDN
  • VoIP

All you need to set up VoIP is a router and Internet access. SIP telephony works by logging on via the public Internet (Internet telephony) or by logging on via a dedicated IP line outside the Internet (IP telephony).
