Self-employment: the courage to start up at 82!

Elsbeth GloorAn interview with Elsbeth Gloor, born in 1933, who founded a wine bar called "Gloor's Wybar" at Gerichtsstrasse 14b in Uster on May 1, 2015. Elsbeth has acquired her extensive knowledge of wines over many years. She wants to encourage people to try something new and turn their passion into a successful business. It's never too late to start your own business.

How did your passion for winemaking and the wine trade come about?

It all began well over three decades ago in Valais. I was on a wonderful hike with my husband and we discovered a vineyard that was being offered for lease. Without further ado, we accepted this challenge with joy and motivation, spent every free minute on the vineyard and cultivated around 1000 vines on an area of around 1200 hectares. It was hard work and there was always a lot to do. But I still have many fond memories of the unforgettable moments we spent there. So self-employment is nothing new to me.

How did it come about that you started trading in wine in German-speaking Switzerland?

We got to know the Bayard family in Valais. Cave du Chevalier Bayard SA became a long-standing business partner. We distributed their wine throughout German-speaking Switzerland and also sold it in our store in Sulzbach in the Zurich Oberland, where we also cultivated a second vineyard for many years. It has always been very important to us that wine culture is passed on. We always wanted to pass on our knowledge and tell the stories behind every wine and every type of vine. I still want to do that today.

How did it come about that you became self-employed again and opened Gloor's Wybar?

Elsbeth GloorAfter my husband passed away a few years ago, I wanted to sell our house in Sulzbach. However, at the beginning I didn't know exactly where I would like to live in the future. When I attended a seminar, I met an architect whose family had been one of our regular customers for many years. He told me about his building project in Uster on Gerichtshausstrasse and I knew immediately that I wanted to buy an attic apartment there. When he mentioned the craft and business premises on the first floor, the idea of a wine bar was born. I still have to do something, otherwise I'll die like a plant that withers!

What would you recommend to other young business people who are founding a start-up?

If you like doing something, you are usually good at it. That's why it's almost easy to be successful if you turn your passion into a business! An important tip from me in connection with self-employment is: Always be special and unique. You can only do that if you remain yourself.

What are your goals for Gloor's Wybar?

With my Wybar, I want to offer something that is hardly available today: I want to offer my guests good wine in a cozy atmosphere, which is not to be found in the wholesale trade. But I don't just want to serve and sell, it's very important to me to live the wine culture here. This means that I like to tell customers about the history of the wines and their producers, that I cater to their individual preferences and tastes and that I take a lot of time for everyone who comes by. I am happy to see every new face and always enjoy my work!
