Thun enjoys a unique location between the lake and the Alps and is known as the gateway to the Bernese Oberland. The Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau rise above Lake Thun. The town is located at the north-western end of Lake Thun and lies 560 m above sea level. The River Aare flows from Lake Thun in the direction of Bern through Thun (about 1.5 km from the lake) and is a major feature of the townscape. The town center consists of the lower town, the Schlossberg with the castle and town church, the upper main street and the Bälliz island on the Aare as a popular promenade. The new districts are located on the alluvial plain at the north-western end of Lake Thun. The northern neighboring municipality of Steffisburg borders directly on the city center with the district of Schwäbis. To the south, the former villages of Dürrenast and parts of Gwatt are now part of the town's closed settlement area. To the west are the Lerchenfeld district, the Allmend (today mainly used as a military training area) and the Allmendingen district. To the east, the municipal area includes the village of Goldiwil and Hügelland. Hünibach, on the other hand, is no longer part of the municipality of Thun, even though it has grown together with the town. With a population of around 44,000, Thun is the eleventh largest city in Switzerland. Together with the agglomeration, Thun has a population of around 80,000. Thun is also the largest garrison town of the Swiss Armed Forces. The administrative district of Thun covers an area of 21.57 km2. The town is well connected to the national network via Thun railroad station. Two intercity lines run to the Central Plateau (Bern, Olten, Thun, Zurich, Romanshorn) and the Oberland (Spiez, Interlaken, Lötschberg, Brig-Gils). Thun also has direct connections to Berlin and Milan. With the S1 through the Aare valley, S4 and S44 through the Grübetal and Emmental valleys and the Regioexpress Lötschberger, the town is well connected regionally. STI bus services and the Steffisburg - Thun - Interlaken tramway provide local public transport links. It takes 20 minutes by public transport to get to Bern, one and a half hours to Lucerne, Thun and Zurich and around two and a half hours to Geneva and St. Gallen. Thanks to the wide range of public transport connections, getting to Thun schools is quick and very convenient.
The most important transport links to the Bernese Oberland run through Thun. The town is connected to the Swiss national road network via the A6 with the Thun Nord and Thun Süd exits. Bypasses for the heavy traffic in the city center are planned. The journey by car from Bern takes half an hour, from Lucerne 1 ¼ h, from Thun and Zurich 1 ½ h and from St. Gallen and Geneva 2 ¼ h. There are city parking lots in the center of Thun, which are named after each cardinal point and are open 24 hours a day.
