The city of St.Gallen is the capital of the canton of the same name and is located at the border triangle of Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein. The town lies 700 meters above sea level on the Steinach River, which flows into Lake Constance, and includes the Sittertobel. The main part of the village lies in a wide valley between two parallel hills - the Rosenberg to the north and the Freudenberg to the south, which includes three ponds and a local recreation area. The valley is bordered to the southwest by the Sitterschlucht gorge. The origins of the town date back to the 7th century - it became an imperial town in 1180. It takes its name from the wandering monk Gallus. The historic part is located on the upper reaches of the Steinach. Large parts of the town are located on unstable peaty soil with a high proportion of groundwater, as the town is situated in the shallow midland molasse. Many of the buildings in the town center were built on oak piles - as were the railroad station and the main post office. It lies on the main traffic routes from St. Margrethen to Zurich and from Romanshorn to Lucerne. The town forms the gateway to Appenzellerland. The collegiate church and library have been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Thanks to the St.Gallen Abbey, the town became an important educational center early on and there are still numerous schools in St.Gallen today.
St.Gallen has a population of over 80,000 and covers an area of 39.38 km2. There are three city districts, which date back to the amalgamation of the city in 1918: West (Straubenzell with Winkeln, Bruggen and Lachen), Centrum (city center with Rosenberg, Riethüsli, St. Georgen, Nordost- and Südostquartier) and Ost (Tablat with Rotmonten, Langgass-Heiligkreuz, St. Finden, Notkersegg and Neudorf) with their respective neighborhood groups and districts. The town's economic boom began with the textile industry in Eastern Switzerland. St.Gallen embroidery is still famous today for its lace, even though it had to overcome various crises. The town was connected to the railroad network in 1856 with the St.Gallen Winkeln - St.Gallen railroad line. Today, the St.Gallen railroad station connects eastern Switzerland with the surrounding regions. Long-distance services are also available to Zurich, Geneva, the Rhine Valley and Graubünden. Zurich airport can be reached in an hour and the smaller St. Gallen-Altenrhein airport in 30 minutes. This means you can reach the schools in St.Gallen from various regions. In addition to St.Gallen railroad station, there are four other stations: St.Gallen St. Finden, St.Gallen Bruggen, St.Gallen Winkeln and St.Gallen Haggen. The St.Gallen trolleybus and the St.Gallen streetcar operate in the city. The Mühleggbahn connects the city with the St.Georgen district as a local recreation area via a cable car. The cabin runs automatically every five minutes and covers a distance of 319 meters or can also be requested by pressing a button at the station. You can also get to centrally located schools in St.Gallen from the station on foot or by bike on the Velostrasse.
St.Gallen is relieved of through traffic by the Rosenberg and Stephanshorn highway tunnels below the city. The city center can be reached via four exits of the urban freeway. There are many speed limits for traffic safety, which are also frequently checked. From Zurich, you can reach Kreuzbleiche in just over an hour via the A1. Wil can be reached by car in around 25 minutes, Wattwil in 30 minutes, Appenzell and Amriswil in 20 minutes, Rorschach in 15 minutes and Weinfelden in 40 minutes. It is therefore easy to get to the "Schulen St.Gallen" by private transport from the surrounding regions. As parking spaces are sometimes in short supply, there are limited parking durations. For this reason, there are mainly short-term parking spaces in the city center. There are also various parking garages around the old town.
