Schwyz is located in the heart of Switzerland between Lake Lucerne and the small Lake Lauerz. The lively little town is the capital of the canton of the same name in central Switzerland. And Switzerland owes its name and coat of arms to this small town. This is because Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden entered into an alliance in 1291. With the victory at the Battle of Morgarten, they jointly drove out the Austrians in 1315. The village of Schwyz lies 516 meters above sea level on the southern slope at the foot of the Mythen. The municipality is made up of the districts of Schwyz, Rickenbach, Ibach and Seewen and is largely intertwined. Over two thirds of the population are Roman Catholics. A devastating fire in 1642 almost completely destroyed the former town. Today, Schwyz stands for inner-Swiss serenity, tradition and innovation.
Schwyz has over 15,230 inhabitants and covers an area of 53.18 km2. As the small town is in a rural location, large parts of the land are made up of fields, meadows, pastures and forests. The people of Schwyz did not always fare well economically. From the 16th century onwards, many had to go off to serve in foreign wars only to return as wealthy men. They were then able to build stately homes. Important economic pillars today are the well-known company Victorinox AG as manufacturer of the Swiss Army Knife, the Mythen Center shopping mall, cheese dairies and Max Felchlin AG as manufacturer of Swiss chocolate and other confectionery products. Schwyz also has a well-equipped range of schools for education.
Schwyz railroad station is on the Gotthard line and is located around two kilometers outside the village of Schwyz in the Seewen district. The station is served by Interregios and S-Bahn trains. Thanks to the local transport service provided by the Auto AG Schwyz bus company, which connects the station with the village center, it is easy to get to the desired schools in Schwyz. The Schwyz-Stoos funicular railroad has been running from Schlattli to Stoos in the south-east of the municipality since 1933. Today it is the second steepest funicular in the world. On the Stoos, students quickly forget their sometimes stressful everyday school life from the schools in Schwyz.
Thanks to its central location, the town of Schwyz is easily and quickly accessible from all directions. This makes it easy for students to get to "Schulen Schwyz". Coming from Basel (approx. 90 min) or Lucerne (approx. 35 min), take the A4 highway in the direction of Schwyz, take the Schwyz exit and follow the signs to Stoos/Muotathal. Coming from Lake Constance or Rapperswil (approx. 40 min), drive a short distance on the A3 highway towards Gotthard at Pfäffikon (approx. 35 min) and take the Gotthard/Schwyz exit. The country road takes you via Rothenthurm and Sattel to Schwyz. From Gotthard or Altendorf (approx. 40 min), take the bypass at Flüelen in the direction of Schwyz and leave the highway after the Mosi tunnel at exit 40 Brunnen. Then take the direction Ibach/Schwyz. The journey from Zurich to Schwyz takes about 45 minutes. Schools in Schwyz are therefore easily accessible from many places. There are numerous parking options - at the train station, the main square, Hofmatt, Mythenforum, the cemetery, Seewen lakeside resort, Steisteg, Chüchlibunker, the government building, the town hall and Schmiedgasse.
The primary school level in Schwyz is spread across the districts. The upper school, on the other hand, is centrally located in the Rubiswil school building in the Ibach district. There is also a music school, day schools, a commercial vocational school and a cantonal school with a grammar school and secondary school called Kantonsschule Kollegium (Kollegi in Swiss German). There is also a curative education center in Ibach. The range of schools on offer is supplemented by art schools, private schools, bridge courses, vocational schools, vocational colleges and universities of applied sciences. For the size of the town, this is quite a diverse selection of schools in Schwyz.
After visiting a school in Schwyz, you can enjoy hearty Schwyz specialties such as cheese soup, bread soup, hay soup, Leutschner white wine soup, alpine cheese slice, Hechtchnusperli, Benedictine stew (meat pot), potato and bacon cake called Einsiedler Ofenturli, Schwyz sausages or, for sweets, traditional doughnuts, Muotathal-style fänz (butter flour milk dessert with local blueberries), apple flatbread, Muotathal cream cherry cake and gingerbread biscuits. Popular drinks include Maisgold beer, Schwyz wines and local schnapps. It is also worth wandering around the Buuremärcht in Schwyz or the Schwyz weekly market to discover fresh regional produce. There are some great restaurants, cafés and a bar around the main square where you can eat and relax between visits to a school in Schwyz.
The Federal Charter Museum houses the most important documents of early Switzerland, such as the founding charter of the Swiss Confederation. The main façade is adorned with a mural by the Uri painter Heinrich Danioth. The Forum of Swiss History offers a multimedia experience of how the old Confederates lived between 1300 and 1600. You should also visit the richly furnished living museum in the Ital-Reding House and the old Bethlehem House from the Wilhelminian era, which survived the fire. Also worth seeing are the Schwyz Treasure Tower, the Catholic parish church of St. Martin, the Dominican monastery of St. Peter, the Kerchel with the Chapel of the Holy Cross and the town hall. A visit to a cherry distillery is also worthwhile. The most striking features are the rock pyramids above the limestone basin: the Grosser and Kleiner Mythen - a destination for hikers. If you have some time after visiting "Schulen Schwyz", you can visit the Goldau Nature and Animal Park, Lake Laurenz, Ingenbohl Monastery or take the Rotenfluh Railway. The Mythen Center Schwyz or the Victorinox Factory Store invite you to go shopping. So there is plenty to do after school in Schwyz.
