Liestal is the capital of the canton of Basel-Landschaft. It is located around 15 km south-east of Basel and is part of its agglomeration. Liestal lies in a Jura valley on the Ergloz, the main river in the Basel region. It is bordered to the north-east by a continuous mountain range, to the south-west by mountain ranges, to the south by the foothills of the Furlen and mountains to the south-west and west. The city is hilly and therefore the highest point is 614 m above sea level and the lowest 287 m. Basel and Basel Airport are around 20 to 25 minutes away and it takes 60 minutes to get to Zurich. IC and IR lines run from there to Basel, Aarau-Zurich-St. Gallen, Bern-Interlaken and Lucerne. ICE connections run to Basel, Berlin and Hamburg and EC connections to Zurich and Munich.
