The growing expectations and increasing pressure in school education are a growing challenge, especially for children with deficits. Children and young people who need a little more time, are not very motivated, show little flexibility or do not receive much support from their family environment are in danger of falling behind and losing touch. School or class assistants accompany the class during individual lessons and provide support for the teacher as well as for individual pupils. In practical terms, this means that they carry out copying tasks for the teacher, for example, or that they look after individual children and young people or smaller groups separately during an assignment and are on hand to answer any questions they may have. They also support children and young people who have difficulty organizing and working independently according to weekly plans and discuss with them what should be done and when, then check with them whether everything has been completed and thus guide them individually towards greater independence. A teacher with 20 or more pupils cannot carry out such tasks - there is simply not enough time. The school assistants therefore make an important contribution to everyday school life. As the interface between the triangle of child or young person, teaching staff and school, they fulfill a variety of tasks. A clear and unambiguous job description does not yet exist. In turn, every school and every teacher has different expectations of school assistants.
