Salutogenesis: information, overview of offers and providers

The term was developed in the 1970s by the Israeli-American medical sociologist Aaron Antonovsky (1923-1994). According to the salutogenesis model, health is not a state, but an ongoing process. Antonovsky's most important thesis is that the sense of coherence must be regarded as the core of the question "How does health arise?". Anonovsky compared the pathogenetic approach of medicine with the image of people being rescued from a raging river with great effort, without thinking about how they got into it and why they cannot swim better. Life influences such as stress, crises, strokes of fate and illness are raging currents in the river of life and modern medicine and therapy rarely succeed in bringing people permanently ashore from these currents and saving them.

Salutogenesis, on the other hand, does not view people as walking dry-shod along the shore, but sees them constantly in the midst of the changing current of life, from which there is no escape except by becoming a good swimmer. Training and arming oneself against the adversities of life mobilizes powers of resistance that help to keep one's head above water.
